Who Is Dan Lanning Wife? Meet Sauphia Lanning, the Oregon Coach’s Partner and Cancer Survivor

Oregon Ducks head football coach Dan Lanning and his wife, Sauphia Lanning, have continued supporting cancer research through charitable initiatives shaped by her experience with a rare form of bone cancer. In 2026, the couple participated in fundraising efforts for the Sam Day Foundation, an organization supporting research into childhood cancers.

Sauphia, who completed cancer treatment in 2017, has been married to the Oregon coach since October 2009. The couple share three sons, Caden, Kniles and Titan, and have built their family life around Lanning’s demanding college football career.

Their relationship began years before Lanning became one of college football’s prominent head coaches. From meeting at a Missouri restaurant to navigating a serious medical diagnosis, the couple have spoken publicly about the experiences that shaped their marriage.

Dan Lanning and Sauphia Met While Working at a Restaurant

Dan and Sauphia Lanning first met in 2005 while working at an Outback Steakhouse in Liberty, Missouri. Dan was attending William Jewell College and playing football, while Sauphia was pursuing her education.

Sauphia was born in Kansas City in 1987 and studied advertising and public relations at Northwest Missouri State University. During college, she worked in student media and served as a resident assistant.

The couple married on October 17, 2009, four years after meeting. Their relationship continued through Dan’s early coaching assignments, which eventually took the family to several college football programs across the country.

At his introductory Oregon press conference in December 2021, Lanning acknowledged his wife’s support and recalled their first meeting.

He said, “She’s done so many important things for our family to show her support, and it’s crazy to think that our journey together started about 16 years ago at Outback Steakhouse.”

Sauphia has also maintained a professional career outside her husband’s work in football. She has worked in marketing at H&R Block, with her employment there dating back to 2014.

Sauphia Lanning Was Diagnosed With Bone Cancer in 2016

The Lanning family faced a serious medical challenge in 2016 when Sauphia was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare cancer that develops in bone tissue.

At the time, Dan was working as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. Sauphia initially experienced knee discomfort in May 2016, but the pain gradually became severe enough to require medical investigation.

Doctors discovered a tumor near her knee, leading to chemotherapy and major surgery. Her treatment involved months of hospital visits and significant physical challenges.

In a 2024 ESPN interview, Sauphia recalled her husband’s support during treatment.

“I sat in a wheelchair and [Dan] would push me around the hospital and he would sing to me,” she said. “I was so sick. I was skinny, I was bald, and he never looked at me as anything other than Sauphia.”

She completed active treatment in May 2017 and marked the occasion with a bell-ringing ceremony at West Cancer Center in Memphis.

In May 2025, the family celebrated eight years since she completed treatment without a reported recurrence.

Dan Lanning and His Wife Have Three Sons

Dan and Sauphia Lanning are parents to three sons named Caden, Kniles and Titan. The family lives in Oregon, where Dan has served as the Ducks’ head coach since 2022.

Lanning has repeatedly discussed the importance of being present for his children despite the travel, recruiting responsibilities and long working hours associated with college football.

His wife’s illness also influenced his approach to coaching and family responsibilities.

In a 2024 interview, Lanning said, “The minute you realize that you’re about to lose something a lot more important than football, it changed my focus.”

He added, “That was a moment that reset my life where family came first.”

In 2023, Lanning received a tattoo featuring Sauphia’s portrait, their sons’ names, a yellow cancer-awareness ribbon and a boomerang representing the restaurant where the couple met.

The tattoo also includes the 816 area code associated with the Kansas City region, reflecting the family’s Missouri roots.

The Lanning Family Helped Design Oregon’s Cancer Awareness Uniforms

In September 2024, Oregon announced a special football uniform created with contributions from Dan, Sauphia and their three sons.

The Ducks wore the yellow “Heroes” uniforms against Michigan State on October 4, 2024, as part of the university’s Stomp Out Cancer initiative.

The design included personal details connected to Sauphia’s treatment. Small ice cream cone images represented the family’s tradition of getting ice cream after her chemotherapy sessions.

The uniforms also featured cancer-awareness colors and elements honoring patients, survivors and medical professionals.

The project connected the family’s experience with Oregon’s broader efforts to raise awareness and support cancer research.

Dan and Sauphia Lanning Continue Supporting Cancer Research

On May 6, 2026, Dan and Sauphia hosted the inaugural Sam Day Classic at Eugene Country Club. The fundraising golf event supported the Sam Day Foundation, which finances research into childhood cancers.

The foundation was established in memory of Sam Day, who was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at age nine and died in August 2016 after a six-year illness.

In June 2026, the Lannings participated in an interview with foundation executive director Lorna Day about Sauphia’s treatment and the need for better cancer therapies.

“It’s not easy to, you know, be a survivor, but you’re also very grateful to still be here,” Sauphia said.

She also discussed how her experience as an adult cancer patient affected her understanding of the challenges facing children undergoing similar treatments.

“I’ve been through all the treatments and I went through it when I was 29, so I was a lot older and I mean, stronger than some of these young kids that are going through it and I just can’t imagine doing it at such a young age,” she said.

The couple’s fundraising efforts continued into September 2026. During an ESPN College GameDay appearance on September 12, Dan successfully hit a football goalpost crossbar on his third throw, triggering a $500,000 charitable pledge from Pat McAfee.

Lanning selected the Sam Day Foundation as the beneficiary and pledged another $50,000 personally, bringing the announced contribution to $550,000.

The family remains involved with the organization, which has scheduled another Sam Day Classic in Eugene for May 5, 2027, with Dan and Sauphia listed as hosts. Sauphia continues to be publicly recognized as a cancer survivor, while Dan remains Oregon’s head football coach.
